Course advice may influence the selection of clubs or striking methods used by a player during the match. Course advice does not include rule reminders or bulletin information (such as the position of hazards or the position of the flag on the putting green).
During any regular competition, a player is not allowed to provide any advice to other players on the course except to players from the same team. Similarly, a player can only ask for advice from his or her own teammate or the caddie of a teammate.
(a) Beyond the putting green.
Beyond the putting green, a player can ask for and get advice on the line of play from anyone, but when a player is to strike, he or she shall not designate anyone standing within or near the boundary line or even within the extended area of the boundary line of the hole. Before the stroke is made by a player, all marks made by the player, or made with his knowledge, indicating boundary positions or any hints intended to indicate the line of play, shall be erased. This rule is not applicable to the pole flags on the course or indications made by course staff by raising flag.
(b) On the putting green.
When the ball is on the putting green, the player, his or her teammates or their caddies can point out the line of play before but not during the stroke. In doing so, touching the putting green or making any marks to indicate the line of play is not permitted.
