BMW Golfing philosophy.

BMW has been involved in golfing for 20 years. Both golfing and BMW are well-known for exclusiveness, aesthetics and perfection. For BMW, the global prevalence of the sport allows for worldwide media interest. In addition to sponsoring, BMW 's involvement in the world of golfing also incorporates the organisation of professional PGA Tour listed events and the engagement as organiser of an amateur golfing series every golfer can compete in.

The involvement of BMW in international golfing began back in 1989, with the inaugural BMW International Open. In the meantime, BMW has expanded its involvement by taking over the title sponsorship of the BMW Championship – formerly known as the PGA Championship. When it comes to the BMW Asian Open – held at Shanghai for the past two years – and the BMW International Open, BMW is active both as organiser and promoter.

At the same time, BMW also supports national golfing events and organises the world's biggest tournament series for amateur golfers, the BMW Golf Cup International, which is expected be contested by about 100,000 golfers once again.

During this year's BMW International Open, the company announced its nomination as 'Official Car' of the 2006 Ryder Cup, which will be held from 22nd to 24th September, in Ireland. This agreement underlines the continuity of the worldwide BMW engagement in golfing and the partnership with the PGA European Tour.

Since the inaugural event, the BMW International Open has been an example for absolute top class performance. A familiar but professional environment and massive crowds are vital components of this event. Furthermore, the attractiveness of the BMW International Open is increased by the fact that it represents the last chance to qualify for the Ryder Cup, every second year.

Since 2001, the BMW Asian Open has been an inherent part of the Asian professional tour and is one of China's most prestigious events. As is the case in the BMW International Open, BMW is not only the promoter of the event but has also taken responsibility for the tournament's organisation. This double function turned out to be the perfect way to allow for the optimum effect of the existing marketing potentials. Thanks to its support of sporting and cultural events, BMW is regarded as a highly respectable brand, in the Asian region.

In addition to the BMW International Open and the BMW Asian Open, BMW has clearly increased its engagement, this year. In co-operation with the PGA European Tour and as the event's new eponym, BMW organises one of the most prestigious European tournaments, since 2005: the BMW Championship held at Wentworth, England, located close to London. Apart from the (British) Open Championship, the BMW Championship represents Europe's most prestigious tournament, guaranteeing BMW global TV coverage and brand presence, thus underlining the premium brand image of BMW in the world of golfing.
